ASSOSA is a federation of co-operatives based 700km west of Addis Ababa, and trades oilseed crops. It was set up as a small factory to produce edible oil. Farmers in this area are some of the poorest in EDP’s portfolio, and have significantly benefited from higher sales and prices. 35% of ASSOSA’s 12,500 members are women (a significant increase from 6% when they joined the portfolio in 2009).
ZEMBABA, a honey producer based 550km north of Addis Ababa, has been supported by EDP to set up a workshop to produce beehives. The enterprise has increased production from 40 to 200 beehives a month, while also diversifying into other activities, including a large-scale honey export.
